Young people not in employment, education or training: Eurofound report

Teaser :
With unemployment levels for young people at unprecedented levels across the EU, a new report published today by Eurofound reveals how the greatest urgency lies with the 14 million young people currently not in employment, education or training (NEETs). Eurofound’s latest comparative research findings on NEETs show that the economic loss to society of not integrating NEETs is estimated at €153 billion, in addition to the inestimable costs for their disengagement from society in general.
News :
The immediate future of Europe depends upon the 94 million Europeans aged between 15 and 29. Apart from the challenges that young people for generations have faced as they embark up on adult life, this generation will live in an era of full globalisation and will have to cope with the responsibility of an ageing population.

The report, by the EU’s own research agency, Eurofound, has discovered that Europeans aged 15 to 29 who are not in employment, education or training (known as Neets) have reached record levels and are costing the EU €3bn a week in state welfare and lost production.

Moreover, NEETs are at higher risk of being politically and socially alienated. Compared to their non-NEET counterparts, NEETs have a dramatically lower level of political interest, political and social engagement, and a lower level of trust.

The research, will be presented at a high-level EU presidency employment meeting in Cyprus on 29 October.

„The consequences of a lost generation are not merely economic,” the report warns, „but are societal, with the risk of young people opting out of democratic participation in society.”
